1. Because they're too narrow-minded to understand that not all people are good, kind-hearted, leaders who will never make mistakes.

2. Because they know that deep inside, they would have made all the same mistakes that the characters made.

3. Because they see a part of that psychological ferocity inside themselves.

In my opinion, this film was brilliant. It was a psychological study of what happens to people who are thrust into a life or death situation. The character break-downs alone are genius. There are people out there who fit into each of the character types -- religious fanatics, realists, idealists, followers, leaders, patriots, traitors, cowards, etc.

When fear is the catalyst, it can motivate you positively or negatively.

To those of you who are "disgusted" or "disappointed" by the ending: who are you to claim that you could never make the same decision as Thomas Jane's character? You've probably never been in a situation like that -- no one, no one can truly say or know how they will react until they are put in that kind of position.

It's a shame that he didn't just wait a little longer, but the character was psychologically and physically beaten and worn to the point of no return. He believed he was saving his son from a fate worse than death: if those bugs got him, chances are his poor little body would have become a vessel for birthing more little bugs, just like that MP. The boy told his father in the store: "Daddy, don't let the bugs eat me." And Jane's character did not let that happen.

Also, people are missing the point of the film by delving to deeply into trying to discern the film's politic; it wasn't about that at all. Each character's opinions and view points had at least some believability and/or logic. There was not one person who was entirely right or wrong or without mistake except for the woman who left the store to be with her two little children. That was the best decision she probably ever made, and it certainly paid off in the end.
