If only for the visuals if nothing else, this should have been animated for best short. Whoever says that this animation is worse than shrek should really go and look at the human characters in those movies. This movie was amazing and had an unreal level of detail. While things like clothes and wood may not yet have been perfected, skin certainly has, and the rusty metal looks extremely convincing as well. The low key lighting is astounding and far beyond the completely flat lighting of the Shrek movies. The style with which this is created is amazing. Is the movement perfect? No, but neither is the movement in any other animated film. It certainly is a joy to watch though and it was the best animated short of the year.
Obviously the people who did not enjoy the visuals, like the academy, do not have an appreciation for the hyper realistic CG style of this and Final Fantasy, and to some degree the recent "Polar Express" from a different company (it was also snubbed by the Oscars).
And if you don't like anime, don't watch the animatrix. Simple as that.
If you are a fan of anime, you'll love the interesting shorts from various famous and influential anime directors (except for that last one from the director of Aeon Flux and Rugrats. Rugrats? I know he was selected to fill in for someone else who dropped out suddenly, but what were the Wachowskis thinking?) Anyways go out and see this.
