Franco Nero goes mad when his fiancée is killed
10 June 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"The Third Eye" (1966) moves quickly and directly, wasting no time in depicting a decayed aristocracy living in a big villa. The surviving members are a highly possessive mother (Olga Solbelli) who wants to prevent her son (Franco Nero), a Count, from marrying Erika Blanc or anyone for that matter. Nero and Blanc do not get along that well at the outset, he being childish and jealous. For a grotesque hobby, he's a taxidermist and his descent into outright madness therefore plays off of "Psycho" (1960) as does the splendid black and white cinematography. Solbelli suggests an "accident" to the resentful maid (Gioia Pascal) who grew up with the family and has slaved for it in inferior status forever. Pascal sees a way up and sees to it that Blanc is removed from the scene, well, almost, because the lovesick Nero is a taxidermist. There are more complications, I assure you.

"Psycho" is a film noir that announces themes and a tone that take us into the post-noir or neo-noir era. There is a new direction for noir that appeared. "The Third Eye" is of the same vintage, and so are a number of other 60s black and white films like "Hysteria" (1965), "Scream of Fear" (1961), "The Couch" (1962) and "Paranoiac" (1963). "The Third Eye" also appears on lists of giallos as an early example, but it really shares very little with the kind of film and specific content that that term came to identify.

I found this movie engrossing. I recommend it.
