Senator Springer?, 13 July 2003
Author: edmundmuskie da America

Well what can you say about Jerry Springer that has not already been said about him? Springer's show was something I watched way back in 1993 before it started having all of the really bad stuff associated with it. Springer is from Ohio, a different part of Ohio from where I live, Cincinnati. I am from Ravenna, a city just west of Akron. His talk show started initially to replace the legendary Phil Donahue.

However the same thing that did in Phil Donahue to a point did in the legitimate insightful Springer: trash television. As talk shows started following suite to Ricki Lake and Jenny Jones, that is trash television Springer had to sink or swim. He chose to swim and created the trashiest sleaziest and worst talk show in the history of the medium up to this point, the Jerry Springer Show.

This show has had more profanity, fist-fights, strip shows, incest, teenage prostitutes and anything else you can imagine than I care to discuss. What is sad is this show is one of the highest rated talk shows in the country. The show also has had many unproven cases where the stories were not real and the producers did little if any background checks on their guests.

I hate his show I really do. But Springer hates his own show. He says his show has not one redeeming value, and he is absolutely right. This show is the embodiment of trash television. But now one of the most ´successful, if you will talk show hosts is planning a run for the US Senate. At first you might think to yourself you have to be kidding me.

But on second thought he has a tremendous amount of advantages. First he has instant name recognition. It may be bad name recognition but everyone in the country knows who this man is and he got his start out of Ohio. One thing many candidates struggle for is to make people know who they are, that is one of the cardinal rules of politics and he has no problem there. He has a successful career in news and politics winning the largest plurality as mayor of Cincinnati and he was very popular as a Cincinnati news anchor.

But there is the other side that this man who has brought out some of the worst in American television is going to make a run for the US Senate, one of the largest states none-the-less. There is legitimate reason to say his even considering a run is a travesty. But it might be fun when he gets to the senate a fist fight might beak out between Trent Lott and Ted Kennedy, and you know what his campaign slogan is going to be: JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY!!!
