"Manhattan Murder Mystery" has the kind of uncomplicated humor that Allen was famous for in his pre-Annie Hall days. It is one of Allen's most charming, if less demanding ventures. You can tell that he is having a good time here. Sure enough, Allen cannot resist the temptation of using the occasion to explore marital phobias, but overall, this is a movie that aims to please the audience, nothing more. Diane Keaton plays a neurotic New Yorker (what else?) who believes her next door neighbor is a murderer. Keaton's husband (Allen) pleads with her to go back to therapy (!), but she is determined to solve the mystery. Angelica Huston is particularly funny as Allen's client who unexpectedly becomes obsessed with Keaton's obsession. The film operates like a spoof of Hitch's "Rear Window", and the ending cleverly makes fun of the ending of Welles' film noir classic "The Lady from Shanghai". So, if you are a movie buff, you will have fun with Allen's allusions to other well-known films. Excellent choice if you just want to kick back and relax.
