Ornella Muti vehicle..

I originally went to see this simply because Ornella Muti (who played Emperor Ming's daughter in the colour film of Flash Gordon) plays a starring role. Its the only one of her several Italian-made films that ever got an international release, apparently.

It's a strange mixture. Ornella's beauty is unquestionable, and the film is mainly a vehicle for her. She plays a psychologically disturbed woman with nymphomaniac tendencies, and of course this leads to various nude scenes, exhibitionism etc. All very titillating to any Muti fans out there... There's also a lot of scenes where she is degraded either by herself or others (head shaving, attacked by fellow mental patients). What plot there is revolves around Ben Gazzara's character figuring out that she has some problems, but loving her all the same.

As always, cinematography of italian cities, buildings and people lifts the atmosphere considerably: but the film lapses into cheesy, cliched episodes. The score's poor too - the same over-blown romantic tune comes crashing in all the time. A lot of the film is hilariously bad actually. BUT: it's worth seeing in my view, if only because audiences can glimpse one of the most beautiful femme fatales of all time in such splendour.
