Burt Reynolds was quoted as saying that late director Robert Aldrich deliberately framed and shot 'The Longest Yard' in 1.33:1 Academy aspect ratio (with the intent that it would be matted theatrically for 1.85:1) because prophetically Aldrich didn't want to see his vision later be manipulated for television screens by panning and scanning.

Continuity: After the first time that Crewe hits Bogdanski "below the belt" with the football, the game clock has stopped at 2:29 remaining in the game, after the second time he does it, the clock is at 2:35 remaining and running.

Real men; no schtick

"The Longest Yard" does not depend on the tiresome innocent-man-behind-bars schtick to evoke the inmates' humanity. Crew, Caretaker, et al are not men because they have been falsely accused, but because they maintain their manhood under conditions of mental and physical cruelty. Their humanity isn't a plot or script convention, but the core of their character. It's refreshing to discover that you're cheering for criminals despite their unapologetic bravado. IMHO, the best "prison" film ever made.
