"Whatever Happened To Aunt Alice" is very enjoyable - the most of its old-lady thriller premise is made by the two lead performances. Geraldine Page's character is hopelessly, hysterically impatient, arrogant and sadistic and Miss Page has great fun with her role. She's too much, with her pompous airs that seem too unbelievable too witness (or hear spoken), but airs she's got in spades! Then to her Ollie is Ruth Gordon's Stanley (is this an appropriate analogy?)... I love their scenes of dialogue together, they're rich with humor and tension. When Page dismisses Gordon's nursing qualifications and Gordon replies "I hope you don't object to it as a bonus!" watch Page become awash with disbelief at Gordon's ability to speak back. Oh, they're right on top of one another! I once had a friend who was just like Mrs. Marrable (for the most part!!!) and it was as if she were constantly daring people to come up to her level of bold arrogance, plus have the wherewithal to respond. Page has got it down and she's hilarious in all her misplaced snootiness. I wish they had gotten rid of the boring romantic subplot and had more of Geraldine plus some more people to annoy her... And Gordon is right on target as well, it's just that Page's role affords more opportunities for theatricality. She really should have gotten an Oscar nomination for the performance. Her gestures, facial expressions, emphasis on speech are all meticulous! Movie is great fun, and the late 60s dry desert setting is a total plus!
