Info divertenti
Curiosità:
Director Paul Thomas Anderson owns a vintage 1910 Pathe camera which contains a special 43mm lens. The lens was specially modified to be used in the film as it has very low resolution and can shift colors at corners. Only certain shots of the film used this lens; for example a shot of Plainview sleeping in the train with an infant H.W. ancoraErrori:
Anacronismi: A bright modern warning light is visible under the dash of one of the cars when a door is opened early in the movie. Several vehicles also display number-plates incorrect for the period. ancoraCitazioni:
H.M. Tilford: We'll make you a millionaire while you're sitting here from one minute to the next.Plainview: What else would I do with myself?
H.M. Tilford: Are you asking me?
Plainview: What else would I do with myself?
H.M. Tilford: Take care of your son. I don't know what you would do.
Plainview: If you were me and Standard offered to buy what you had for a million dollars, why? So, why?
H.M. Tilford: You know why.
Plainview: Yeah, you fellows need to scratch around in the dirt and find it like the rest of us instead of buying up someone else's hard work.
J.J. Carter: [defensively] I've scratched around in the dirt, son.
H.M. Tilford: Where you going to put it all? Where? Build a pipeline, make a deal with Union Oil, be my guest. But if you can't pull it off, you got an ocean of oil under your feet, with nowhere to go. Why not turn it over to us? We'll make you rich. You spend time with your boy. It's a great discovery... Now let us help you.

Why did Daniel kill Eli?Where can I find more details about the film's music: composers, compositions, etc.?
What is the song that begins playing as Plainview carries H.W. away from the gushing derrick?

This film raises the game for everyone out there. I have loved all of Paul Thomas Anderson's work, including his greatly underrated Punch-Drunk Love, but this is a huge leap from any of the previous movies into a realm, as others have said, inhabited by classics such as Treasure of the Sierra Madre - and then some. Every element of this film is astonishing, from the opening twenty minutes, which feature virtually no dialog, to Jonny Greenwood's score, which I have heard criticized as too imposing but which seems just about perfect to me (and brings to mind the non-Blue Danube elements of 2001 at its most experimental). Daniel Day-Lewis' performance is in a league of its own: his voice, his mannerisms, his physical movement, his stunted emotions, are flesh and blood, and hauntingly so, in a way that even Tommy Lee Jones in In The Valley of Elah (which I thought was a pretty staggering performance) can't quite attain. I will watch this film again and again simply to see something so raw and so moving and so gut-wrenching. This is why I love movies; this is what made me want to make movies when I was fourteen years old.
