‘Heathers’ Series Creator Promises ‘Major’ Changes to Cult Classic, Teases Shannen Doherty Cameo
Paramount Network’s “Heathers” is technically an adaptation of the 1988 cult comedy starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, but series creator Jason Micallef said the show will still find ways to put a new spin on the story. “It’s 2018, it’s not 1988,” Micallef told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour on Monday. “No one’s going to want to watch a girl for 10 episodes follow a guy around, murder people and then whine about it.” So Micallef said he created some “very, very major character changes” for the lead character Veronica Sawyer, played by Ryder in the original movie...

A History of ‘Saturday Night Live’ F-Bombs, from Paul Shaffer to Sam Rockwell (Photos)
In more than 40 years of live television, it’s amazing there haven’t been more people who have dropped an f-bomb on “Saturday Night Live.” How is it that Jimmy Fallon has giggled his way through more sketches than there have been Freudian slips from rookie cast members or famous musicians who just couldn’t give a f—, whoops! Sam Rockwell is the latest to have committed “SNL’s” cardinal sin, but he’s hardly the first. Paul Shaffer, 1980 This is the reason why musicians aren’t in more sketches. Why Zoey Deutch is Far and Away the Next “It’ Girl

After reading just a little bit about her I would now argue that Zoey Deutch is not the new ‘It’ girl, at least not be her choice. In terms of her acting talent it’s already being proven that she can hang with some of the best, but the term ‘It girl’ doesn’t inspire her or even strike her as appealing. She’s too much of a free spirit to consider herself in such a term and might actually rebel against it if she was labeled in such a way. Granted, she’s a rising star and might one day rival even the

General Hospital: Is Carly Destined for A Breakdown

General Hospital fans are wondering if perhaps Carly might just have a breakdown of sorts sooner rather than later. She’s not in a good place in some of the other situations she is in, and she’s not working her way through her own life the way she thinks she is. She’s not in a good place, and she’s not going to get her way in anything. We think she’s happy to have the real Jason back, but she’s not happy with Sam’s decisions and how it affects Jason. She’s also not happy about her son and his pregnant ex. She

10 Things We Learned From Four Top Media Analysts at Natpe

Miami — There will be more un-bundling, and there will be re-bundling. There will be a push for stronger regulation of tech giants. And for sure there will be more big paychecks for content providers.

Those were among the predictions and observations offered Tuesday morning by four top Wall Street media and tech analysts — MoffettNathanson’s Michael Nathanson, Morgan Stanley’s Ben Swinburne, Jp Morgan Securities’ Alexia Quadrani, and Maquaries’ Amy Yong — who gathered for the opening session of the Natpe conference, which runs through Jan. 18.

Here are 10 things we learned from the discussion, moderated by Lionsgate investor relations chief James Marsh.

The dizzying pace of change in media and particularly television has Wall Street just as confused as everyone else. “Wall Street is mirroring what is going on in the industry. There’s a lot of convergence and a little bit of confusion of how investors should look at the landscape,” Yong said.

‘Black Lightning’ Boss on Telling a Tale of ‘African-American Paranoia’

The CW’s latest superhero team-up with Warner Bros. Television and DC Comics is “Black Lightning,” helmed by Salim Akil. But although his show shares its origins in comics with the others already established on the network slate, he isn’t interested in having his show exist in a shared universe at this time.

“I kind of feel like the broader audience doesn’t really know who Black Lightning is. They know the name now, but I wanted them to really get to know Jefferson and his family first,” Akil tells Variety, although he recognizes that “down the line” the network might want “Black Lightning” to be a part of their annual crossover events.

Instead, Akil is focusing on introducing Jefferson (Cress Williams), his powers, and his family to a new audience. Calling Jefferson a “community-based superhero,” Akil points out that the show is steeped in his experiences growing up in Richland, Calif. and is

By Tuesday at 10 am Miami time, in one of Natpe most extensive presentations, Brazil’s Globo, Latin America’s biggest broadcast network, will have talked up one of the weightiest line-ups of any international company at this year’s TV trade fair.

Led by “The Edge of Desire,” written by Gloria Perez, the reigning queen of Brazilian’s TV creators, the series represent the current flagships of the Latin American broadcaster which has arguably fared best in recent audience results as it faces off with ever-increased competition from both digital platforms and the rapidly ramping production slates of established U.S. players – Turner, Fox, HBO Latin America, Sony, to name just a few – and is now angling to become a production partner of international dramas.

The presentation comes two months after Globo Group director Roberto Marinho Neto and Globo CEO Carlos Henrique Schroder gave a presentation on Nov. 19 on the eve of the Intl. Emmy Awards

Ann Curry to Appear on ‘CBS This Morning’

Ann Curry will return to morning TV for her first television interview since leaving NBC in 2015.

The former “Today” co-anchor is expected to make an appearance on CBS’ “CBS This Morning” on Wednesday. She is expected to be asked questions about the firing of former coworker Matt Lauer as well as “We’ll Meet Again,” a new documentary series she is about to launch on PBS.

Curry left NBC three years after being pushed from NBC’s “Today” morning franchise after a year as co-anchor. Her awkward on-air departure from the program – NBC executives believed she and Lauer lacked on-screen chemistry – is believed to have been in a factor in the rise of ABC’s “Good Morning America,” which eventually surpassed “Today” to become the nation’s most-watched morning program.

Lauer was fired from NBC in late November, with the network citing “inappropriate” behavior in the workplace. He is one of a number of prominent media executives
