'Flatliners' Composer on the 'True Blood' Scene That Catapulted His Career (Exclusive)

'Flatliners' Composer on the 'True Blood' Scene That Catapulted His Career (Exclusive)
Composer Nathan Barr isn’t a name an ordinary person would recognize, but scour his resume and one is bound to find a television show (True Blood, The Americans) or movie (Grindhouse, Hostel) they’ve obsessed over. Now, Barr is taking his talents to Flatliners, the modern remake of the 1990 sci-fi psychological horror film toplined by Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts and Kevin Bacon.

But Barr, who grew up in Tokyo with musical parents and spent much of his career scoring horror films, credits his experience on True Blood, in which he served as head composer for its entire seven-season run, as his breakthrough moment.

“Ever since True Blood, things started to take off,” the 44-year-old industry vet tells Et. “As composers and in many facets of filmmaking, you always need that one person who endorses us and the phone starts ringing. When [creator] Alan Ball hired me on True Blood, that was one of those moments.”

Exclusive: Beau Mirchoff Talks 'Flatliners' and His Real Near-Death Experience: I Thought 'This Is It'
You can call it Beau 2.0, but Beau Mirchoff won't.

The 28-year-old actor is known to many fans from MTV's high school comedy, Awkward, but his latest role is no Matty McKibben. In the year since Awkward's series finale, Mirchoff has graduated from high school to med school, with the upcoming film Flatliners

"I don't think I can play high school anymore, which is a good thing," Mirchoff told Et over the phone, insisting that he doesn't consider this the next chapter of his career. "I don't really look at it that way, [but] I feel like I've been evolving since Awkward.

The actor plays Brad, a "naive" medical student in Flatliners, a reimagining of the 1990 film of the same name, which centers on a group of students who conduct experiments trying to produce near-death experiences.

Flatliners Trailer #2 Makes Death Look Like a Blast
Just like this group of medical students in this upcoming thriller, the Flatliners franchise has been brought back from the dead with a new movie hitting theaters later this month. To get fans ready for this "revival" that continues the story from the original 1990 movie, Sony Pictures has dropped a new trailer, that shows how these medical students' lives change drastically after an experiment where they're brought back from the dead. The trailer also reveals the sequel's new tagline, "You haven't lived until you've died."

In Flatliners, five medical students, obsessed by the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment: by stopping their hearts for short periods of time, each triggers a near-death experience giving them a firsthand account of the afterlife. But as their experiments become increasingly dangerous, they are each haunted by the sins of their pasts, brought on

Jc Caylen To Co-Star In Crackle Original Feature ‘Party Boat’

Crackle, Sony's ad-supported video streaming platform, has announced its next original feature -- a raucous comedy called Party Boat. In addition to SNL and Jerry Maguire actor Jay Mohr, the film also touts some digital star wattage from noted vlogger Jc Caylen.

Also appearing in Party Boat are Brett Davern (Crackle’s Chosen), Beau Mirchoff (MTV’s Awkward), Sung Kang (Fast And Furious 6), Demetrius Bridges (The Vampire Diaries), and Katie LeClerc, who most recently headlined Awesomeness’ first original Awestruck series, Confess. In the film, Davern plays an irresponsible party animal named Max who is on a mission to throw a wild birthday party for his best friend and longtime crush (Leclerc), whose boyfriend -- unbeknownst to Max -- is planning a proposal.

Flatliners Remake Is Ready for Reshoots

Flatliners Remake Is Ready for Reshoots
Back in November, Sony Pictures made a numberof changes to their upcoming release schedule, including a shift of their Flatliners remake release date, pushing it from the summer slot of August 18 to September 29. As it turns out, there was a good reason for that shift, with director Niels Arden Oplev assembling his cast once again for reshoots, which will take place in Toronto next month. If the studio would have kept the old release date, it would have been cutting it too close for comfort.

Iatse 873, the local Toronto chapter of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees union, revealed on their website that Flatliners reshoots have been scheduled in Toronto for eight days, spanning July 24 to August 1. If Sony would have kept the August 18 release intact, the production would have certainly been rushing to get this new footage into the movie in just a few short weeks. Still, even with the release date delay,

11 TV Teens Who Definitely Aren't Teens Anymore

  • TVfanatic
It's so hard to be a teenager.

It's even harder to be a teenager when an actor, well into their '20s or '30s, is still tapping into those angsty teen emotions.

We get it.

A lot of TV studios cast actors who are older than the characters they play.

But what about those actors who've ended up playing a teenager for several seasons of television?

Here are just a few TV teens who are actually well-past high school.

1. Stefan Salvatore - The Vampire Diaries Paul Wesley has been playing Stefan Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries for 8 years. While Stefan is eternally 17, Wesley himself is in his '30s. 2. Scott McCall - Teen Wolf Teen Wolf, you say? Tyler Posey, who's played teenage werewolf Scott since the beginning of the series, is actually 25. 3. Spencer Hastings - Pretty Little Liars The lying teens may have had a recent time jump into the future,

Got ‘Em! Flatliners Remake Is Actually A Sequel

File this one under “news nobody saw coming… because no one was exactly looking.” There’s been buzz since 2011 about a remake of the sci-fi cult hit Flatliners, but things became more solidified in recent months as a cast popped up around the project, including original star Kiefer Sutherland.

His involvement seemed to indicate that the remake might carry on from the events of the first pic – which would in fact make it a sequel (or at the very least a requel, if you hate yourself enough to engage in that level of Hollywood jargon) – but it wasn’t until earlier this week that Flatliners was unveiled as a full-on sequel.

During an interview with Metro, Sutherland couldn’t help but spoil his real role in the follow-up, saying:

“I play a professor at the medical university. It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that

Awkward: Executive Producers on the MTV Finale Twists

When Awkward was last renewed, it was reportedly for a fifth and final season, leaving the show effectively cancelled, which is... you know, awkward, especially with some of the developments in the finale. Showrunners Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler would like to do a sixth season and say most of the cast is game to continue the series, too. In other words, the show's fate is up to MTV.

Awkward stars Ashley Rickards, Beau Mirchoff, Nikki DeLoach, Jillian Rose Reed, and Brett Davern. In last night's Awkward season five and possibly series finale, there were some twists. Did you see them coming? Chessler previously said it was designed as a series finale, just in case it is the end. Did it feel like one, to you?
