Movie Review – American Made (2017)

American Made, 2017.

Directed by Doug Liman.

Starring Tom Cruise, Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, E. Roger Mitchell, Jesse Plemons, Lola Kirke, Alejandro Edda, Benito Martinez, Caleb Landry Jones, and Jayma Mays.

Synopsis:

A pilot lands work for the CIA and as a drug runner in the south during the 1980s.

Antiheroes require an actor that radiates charisma, so it’s no shock that Tom Cruise (reunited with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman) makes for a likable drug runner, gun smuggler, and greedy scumbag whose financial thirst cannot be quenched. It’s not even long into American Made where renowned pilot Barry Seal (the film is a loose adaptation of the man’s criminal wrongdoings) states in one of his monologues (accomplished by VHS recordings detailing everything that went on during the various stages of his illegal activities) “Who knew having too much money would ever become a problem”. It’s

Will Tom Cruise's American Made Fly High at the Box Office?

Will Tom Cruise's American Made Fly High at the Box Office?
After New Line Cinema's It remake shook the box office out of its horrendous summer slump, it seems those glory days may be already over, with what looks to be a rather weak showing in theaters this weekend. Universal's American Made, Sony's Flatliners remake, PureFlix's A Question of Faith and Novus' Til Death Do Us Part will all be vying for the box office crown, along with an expanding Battle of the Sexes. But it seems like, despite a strong critical showing from American Made, Kingsman 2 will likely repeat atop the box office with a lukewarm $19.7 million, followed by American Made with $16.4 million.

Box Office Mojo reports that American Made will debut in roughly 3,000 theaters, while the Flatliners remake will only arrive in 2,200 theaters, although no theater count estimates were given for Til Death Do Us Part or A Question of Faith. Fox Searchlight's Battle Of the Sexes,

Movie Review – American Made (2017)

American Made, 2017.

Synopsis:

A pilot lands work for the CIA and as a drug runner in the south during the 1980s.

There’s an unshakeable feeling that Tom Cruise is actually trying in American Made, Doug Liman’s derivative if not entertaining Goodfellas-lite comic thriller. Cruise has been the movie star for the past two decades, but his on-screen persona only exists as a parallel to Cruise as the movie star. Few risks are taken, so American Made, albeit steeped in cliché, is a rather welcome detour away from the glamour and stunts of the monolithic blockbusters he finds comfort in.

It’s all too easy to forget his 1-2-3-4 punch of The Last Samurai, Collateral, War of the Worlds,

Emmy Nominations 2017: My Snappy Judgments
The 2017 Emmy nominations were, as per usual, both thrilling and maddening (see full list here). So without further adieu, I give you the good, the bad and the downright ugly from this year’s list.

Review Round-Up: Camera Obscura, Aaron’S Blood, and The Little Hours

  • DailyDead
June ended up being a particularly busy month of releases, and here’s a look at three different indie films that I had the opportunity to check out over the last several weeks:

Camera Obscura: For his feature film directorial debut, co-writer/director Aaron B. Koontz concocts his own “weird episode of Goosebumps” (to borrow a phrase from the film) in Camera Obscura, which feels like a mash-up of Shutter (the original, not the remake) and Final Destination, with a bit of a slasher twist thrown in for good measure. Koontz deftly maneuvers through familiar genre tropes to create an unexpected horror treat, anchored by a strong performance from Christopher Denham (Shutter Island, The Bay).

In Camera Obscura, we meet photographer Jack Zeller (Denham), who has been struggling with Ptsd after returning from shooting photos in the Middle East. His supportive fiancée, Claire (Nadja Bobyleva), decides to pick him

Remote Controlled: John Ridley and Benito Martinez on ‘American Crime’s’ Legacy on TV

Remote Controlled: John Ridley and Benito Martinez on ‘American Crime’s’ Legacy on TV
Welcome to “Remote Controlled,” a podcast from Variety featuring the best and brightest in television, both in front of and behind the camera.

In this week’s episode, Variety’s senior TV reporter Daniel Holloway and TV reporter Elizabeth Wagmeister talk with “American Crime” creator John Ridley and star Benito Martinez about the show’s final season, legacy on television, and possible future.

The ABC series wrapped up its third and final season earlier this year, but despite not being picked up for the 2017-2018 season, Ridley admits he was surprised the show even lasted for three seasons. In fact, Ridley said he never thought the network would move forward past the pilot.

“My inclination was this is not going to happen and I’m probably not going to do want to do it, if I did want to do it, I doubt the network is going to do want to do it in the way I

Emmy Predictions 2017: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie

Emmy Predictions 2017: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie
Last Year’s Winner: Sterling K. Brown, “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

Still Eligible: No.

Hot Streak: While HBO and FX have the most nominations in this category over the past six years, they each have won twice and both have lost twice (to PBS in 2014 and History in 2012).

Fun Fact: Beau Bridges is the only actor to win this category twice. He won for “The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom” (1993) and “The Second Civil War” (1997).

The consistently crowded supporting actor category is again stacked with contenders this year. HBO and FX are at it again with enough offerings to fill the field by themselves (which FX almost did in 2016, with five of the six slots). First up, FX has “Fargo” and “Feud” as top competitors. David Thewlis and Michael Stuhlbarg are damn impressive in Season 3, while Alfred Molina and Stanley Tucci are

'Aaron's Blood': Film Review

'Aaron's Blood': Film Review
A preteen boy becomes a vampire in Aaron's Blood, the dour low-budget horror pic by Tommy Stovall, but this is no Let the Right One In. A closer reference point for this father/son genre drama is Maggie, the 2015 film in which Arnold Schwarzenegger played a father nursing his daughter as she transforms into a zombie. That's a pretty flattering comparison, though, for this sincere but uneven effort, which lacks both the earlier film's star power and its aesthetic coherence. This time out, theatrical prospects are slim.

James Martinez plays the title character, a single dad whose 12-year-old son Tate...

Trailer for ‘American Made’ hopes to put Tom Cruise into the Oscar race

It has been a good long while since Tom Cruise has been a contender for an Academy Award nomination. Yesterday, a Trailer dropped for the upcoming Cruise vehicle American Made, which looks to put the action hero in something slightly weightier than usual. Now, it doesn’t look like a straight up drama, but the adventure is tinged with a potentially heavier destination. Even if that’s not the case, the last time he worked with Doug Liman, we got something kind of awesome in Edge of Tomorrow. Hopefully, history can repeat itself here. We’ll have the Trailer for you at the end of the piece, but first…let’s talk about the movie itself for a moment. The film is based on a true story, though obviously the final product will only have a passing resemblance to what actually happened. Set during the 1980’s, pilot Barry Seal (Cruise
