Imo the ending is the WORST thing about HP7.
I read quite a lot of books. Most of them, especially the "epics" spanning several books, have MASSIVE endings. We're talking certainly several thousand words or so. Enough to actually let you know what happened afterwards. What happened to the characters? How have their actions changed their environment? These questions are usually dealt with.
It's almost like JKR thinks the only thing we wanted to see was Voldy bite the dust. I know *I* was reading the books because of the SETTING more than anything else, and the thrilling plot was just a bonus. I would have appreciated MASSES of text in a come-down.
It's really tantalising, because JKR almost makes it look like she's going to give us more information. Voldy dies, and the kids walk off alone. What do they do? Fix Harry's wand, and that's it, the end. (Excepting the epilogue bit which as far as I can tell is just irrelevant. I'm not invested in a few characters' distant futures, I'm invested in many characters' present situations.)
EVERYTHING except Voldy is left up in the air. Millions of unresolved plot lines. Major characters killed and getting a mere mention. Our final view of the Hogwarts many of us grew up reading about is that of a battlefield.
JKR's problem? She's never had to actually put an ending on a book before. There isn't a HP8 and she should have spent more time working on an ending imo. I especially feel for the younger fans.
